Floating Plants
These plants float on the surface of the water and can remain un-rooted. They provide shade and protection for fish and also help to filter out excess nutrients that may cause algae problems.
(All floaters are considered tropical.)
Water Hyacinth (Eichornia crassipes) - Flowers June-Aug., lavender-blue flowers stand above waxy green foliage
Water Lettuce (Pistia stratoides) - Light green lettuce-like foliage, prefers some shade
Fairy Moss (Azo11a caroliniana) - This plant is a true fern with tiny green leaves that turn red in full sun
Water Velvet (Salvinia ssp.) small rounded leaves that have soft velvety surfaces
Sensitive Plant (Neptunia aquatica) - 6″h, flowers Aug., yellow flowers with fern like foliage that close when touched
Giant Sensitive Fern (Aesichynomene.fluitans) - 6′h, flowers Aug.-Sept., similar to sensitive plant, but larger and faster
Oxygenators
These plants are submerged below the water surface with weights, they do not require potting
(Oxygenators help to balance your pond by adding oxygen to your water and consuming excess nutrients and ammonia; they also provide a place for fish to spawn.)
Sold in bunches with weights.
Hornwort (Ceratophyllum demersum) - Bright feathery green foliage
Anacharis (Egeria densa) - Whirls of deep green leaves
Water Lilies (Nymphaea spp. ) - These plants provide shade and coverage for fish as well providing beautiful flowers throughout the season.
